Patagonia Caramel 170L is a Chilean, crystal malt.
One of the darker Patagonia caramel malts, delivering rich and vibrant red and ruby hues. While the color alone is a reason to give this malt a try, the 170L is also pleasantly restrained in the cloying sweetness it delivers. Tons of color, subtle sweetness; perfect for Dopplebocks, Red ales, Dubbels, and Barley Wines. Crystal malts also add body and improve head retention. Add Caramel 170L wherever its characteristic affect is desired. It is suitable for use in all styles of beer.
Crystal malts are gently cooked during the malting process. Cooking initiates the enzymatic conversion of starches into fermentable sugars, and caramelizes some of the sugars as the malt reaches its final color. This eliminates the need to mash crystal malt, and ensures that some of the sugars will survive fermentation to sweeten the beer.
