Using the ABV calculator by The Hop Shop finding the alcohol content of your homebrew is easy! Simply enter the Original Gravity and Final Gravity using the Specific Gravity Scale into the fields below.
How ABV is calculated
The alcohol content of your brew is determined by measuring your original gravity prior to fermentation, then your final gravity after fermentation has been completed. You can simply use these two numbers to calculate the ABV unless you add other fermentables after you take your original gravity reading. including fruit or additional sugars. These have to be accounted for on their own. This formula works due to the fact that alcohol is less dense than water. therefore, as your wort ferments (and the sugars are converted to alcohol), the density of the beer decreases.
Using our ABV calculator all you have to do is input your Gravity readings and watch as it calculates your ABV!
To calculate alcohol content manually you can use this formula : ABV = (OG – FG) * 131.25
ABV = alcohol by volume, OG = original gravity, and FG = final gravity. So, using this formula with a beer having an OG of 1.059 and a FG of 1.005, your ABV would be 7.09%.
